The checkpoints into Pacific Palisades, which are currently operated by the Los Angeles Police Department, will be closed as of Saturday, June 14, according to Pete Brown, the communications director for Councilwoman Traci Park.

LAPD Chief JIm McDonnell met with Park this morning to discuss the decision, and Brown said that she pressed the chief for “increased patrols in and throughout the Palisades.”

“My understanding is that the LAPD is redeploying assets in light of things that are going on citywide,” Brown said. “They are going to remove the checkpoints, but they will still have increased patrols roaming through the Palisades.”

For safety reasons, the Palisades has been closed since the Jan. 7 Palisades Fire with the National Guard originally overseeing checkpoints into the area, and LAPD taking over a larger number of checkpoints when Pacific Coast Highway was reopened on Memorial Day weekend.

“LAPD is going to constantly reassess,” Brown said. “If there were an incident or issue, they would immediately redeploy or reassess their plan…. [Our] office will also continue to assess things as they unfold over the weekend and keep a very close eye on what’s going on.”
