Free Bioremediation Available for Soil Contaminated by Fire

CAER (Center for Applied Ecological Remediation) FireAid will be providing 50 households with free bioremediation for soil that was contaminated by last year’s fires.

To apply for consideration, residents should fill out a survey/application and provide their soil test results at this link by Apr. 10. By mid-April, selected households will be notified. Households will be chosen based on their applications and potentially a lottery.

Remediation work would begin in April and last about a year. For more information about bioremediation or this program, a video is available at this link.

A second webinar on bioremediation, which was created by partners Resilient Palisades, CAER, and Eaton Fire Residents United (EFRU), can be found here. The webinar explores how fungi, plants, and beneficial soil microbes can stabilize and help remove contaminants from fire-impacted soil. The video highlights real-world applications and emerging approaches to ecological cleanup.

To attend a live webinar on the topic, residents can register for an Apr. 13 event also organized by Resilient Palisades, CAER, and EFRU. The webinar will happen from 6-7:30 p.m., and registration is available here. The session will break down what bioremediation looks like in practice, and walk through what comes next, including resources, opportunities, and ways to get involved.
