P.P. Residents Association Urges Residents to Come Out Against Zone 0
The following is a letter from Jessica Rogers, the president of the Pacific Palisades Residents Association, arguing against the Calif. Board of Forestry and Fire Protection committee’s proposed stringent landscaping regulations: (See related articles here and here.)
California’s proposed Zone 0 wildfire regulations threaten to impose unprecedented costs and irreversibly reshape the character of our neighborhood unless we speak out now.
These rules require the removal of all trees, hedges, and plantings within five feet of homes, regardless of whether it actually improves wildfire safety. Our collective action today is essential to protect not only our properties, but also our local environment, financial well-being, and the livability of our communities.
Zone 0 rules are an imminent, statewide mandate that could force the removal of mature trees, shade, privacy hedges, and critical habitat—costing over $25,000 per property on average, with statewide costs exceeding $50 billion.
Evidence from peer-reviewed science and recent California fires shows that well-maintained, hydrated vegetation often protects homes, while one-size-fits-all clear-cutting may increase fire risk, intensify heat, harm wildlife, and raise utility bills.
This is our last opportunity to push for smart, science-based, flexible, and locally adaptable wildfire rules. The Board of Forestry is finalizing regulations now—public input will help shape their decision.
