Due to elevated levels of hexavalent chromium discovered in the spring air in and around the burn zone of the Palisades Fire, scientists from the LA Fire Health Study recommend that residents consider using both masks and HEPA air purifiers.

Recommendations for choosing an air purifier can be found here. Residents of the burn zone and nearby areas can also obtain a free air purifier from PostFire, a fire recovery organization. The exact addresses that will be serviced with this offer were not available by press time.

When tested in the spring, chromium 6 levels in the Palisades were not necessarily at a dangerous level, but the pollutant’s presence in the air was much higher than usual and warranted further investigation, according to researchers. Levels may have changed now that debris removal has been mostly completed. A previous Canyon News article about the issue is here.

In order to apply for an air purifier, visit this link. Applicants must verify their current address and provide identification and proof of pre-fire residency. A grant from The Change Reaction is funding the effort.

Applicants will also be offered early access to the PostFire Portal, which will launch next month to provide step-by-step guidance for wildfire recovery.
